Find your African adventure…

Africa is a continent of such overwhelming beauty that figuring out where to start exploring can seem quite daunting. Luckily for us Travelstart has made it a bit easier! They have a fun quick quiz that can point you in the right direction…

Yay! Take me to the Quiz!

I did it and my results were… *drumroll please* Botswana!

I have actually been there before, with my family when I was a teenager, and I absolutely loved it! It’s a country so full of natural wonder that you can’t help but fall in love with it. It was such a memorable place that the adventures my family and I had there are still fresh in my memory over 17 years later. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any of the pictures from that trip (I actually think it was in the pre-digital era) so I’ve just put some others in to showcase the perfection that is Botswana.

Here are some of the standout moments of that trip, starting off with my favourite thing about Botswana… Elephants. These majestic giants are, in my humble opinion, the real ‘king of the jungle’ (sorry Lions, you’re great but…). We saw so many Elephant herds every single day that eventually we didn’t even point them out anymore, it was like seeing a tree or some grass… they were EVERYWHERE and it was AMAZING!

Another highlight was accidentally stumbling upon a Lion eating a Kudu. There were about 3 vehicles parked on the side of the road, everyone inside them was looking to the left at a flock of hornbills (we called them ‘Zazu birds’ because of the movie The Lion King). We had our windows open and I remember sitting up on the open window frame and looking over the roof of the car. At some point someone looked to the right and saw that about a metre away from our vehicle a Lion was devouring a freshly caught Kudu. Thankfully he was too preoccupied to eat the idiots hanging out of their vehicles (one of those idiots being me) and we quickly got back in and closed everything up.

Just try to envision the awe-inspiring sight of a blood soaked lion sitting inside the carcass of the Kudu he just took down. It really is a once in a lifetime kind of moment, and in Africa you will be lucky enough to experience more than just a few of those moments.

Then there was the time that my dad got too close to a Hippopotamus to get a good photo (yes that’s where I get that from, thanks dad). Hippos look slow and mellow, but that’s all a facade. They are actually fast and very aggressive. They can run up to 30km/hr, outrunning a human quite easily, and are responsible for killing more people than any other large animal in Africa.

So anyway my dad got too close, started running, hippo started chasing him, and even with quite a headstart he started closing in on my dad. *Cue a lot of screaming and shouting from all of us…* He made it by the skin of his teeth. He reached the wall (the only thing standing between us and the hippo’s) just as the Hippo reached him. And so he lived to see another day!

The final memory I want to share with you all is a funny one, well… funny and terrifying depending on which side of the story you’re on. We were camping in the Okavango Delta area and in the middle of the night, pitch dark, my father decides to walk to the ablution block without switching his torch on. So off he goes and SMACK bang into a tree… except the tree had horns, and it was a Buffalo. Yes you read that right – a BUFFALO. Luckily for my dad they both panicked and ran in the opposite direction. I wouldn’t recommend adding this or the previous incident to your adventure itinerary though!
