Last week I took a drive, a fairly long drive, down to the land of Somerset West. Why? I was “getting my hair did” by my lovely new stylist Tash Faydherbe! Woohoo! In my younger days, I used to hate getting my hair done, I always felt like it was such a waste of time, an expensive waste of time. Well, my perspective has changed dramatically!
Your hair has a HUGE impact on how you look, so it’s definitely a worthwhile investment. We do so much to our hair nowadays that keeping it in tip top shape is difficult. Luckily for us all, there are products out there that can help! Lucky for me I have an amazing stylist to tell me what I need and to help me get my hair back to a healthy state!
The Institute Aesthetic Salon is situated in a beautiful building on the corner of Andries Pretorius Street and Stellendal Road. I arrived for my appointment, on a rainy morning, of course, it always rains when I’m going to get a blow-dry!
The inside of the salon blew me away! A big beautiful bright space full of smiling stylists and happy clients. You know the line “You had me at hello” well, they had me at reception…
I followed Tash, the stunning stylist, through the salon to their Colour section. I love the way this place is set up! Everything has its own section. There is a row of chairs for colouring, directly opposite is the row for cuts & blow-drying.
On the other side of the salon are the wash basins, in close proximity to the private treatment room (see below).

Their Colour Bar is insane, I’ve never seen a display like this, such a cool concept! They also have a courtyard outside where you can have a smoke if you’re so inclined.
The first order of business was a full head of highlights. I’ve never seen anyone separate strands of hair faster than Tash, she’s the freaking Usain Bolt of highlights! The goal was to get rid of my darker regrowth and just even out the blonde. Once the colour had been on for a while, and I had enjoyed my pot of tea, it was time to go to the basin for my toner. Poor Tash had to contend with my yellow prone blonde, but she succeeded and my hair is a lovely shade of what I call “dark platinum”.
I have to add that the way everything smells is insane. It’s heavenly! Everything… the colour, toner, shampoo, conditioner, treatment! I just wish you could smell how good all the products smell through this blog post!
After my toner was washed out I was ushered to the private treatment room for my Redken customizable treatment.
The Redken customizable treatment is this clever little treatment that your stylist puts together specifically for your needs. My hair needed protein and moisture so Tash used two shots of extreme and one shot of all soft, and then balanced the PH levels out with a 3.5 phix phase… have I lost you? If this sounds like gibberish, don’t worry, I’m also clueless.
Basically, they tailor-make a treatment cocktail for your specific hair needs, then they seal it in with the pH balancer and finish it off with an intense masque. It’s fantastic and I highly recommend it, I could see the difference in my hair straight away! And if somehow that wasn’t enough to convince you… all this happens while you lie on a chair that massages your back AND a lovely lady massages your head! I could seriously get used to this!

The last step was my cut and blow. My already short hair got even shorter, and I love my cut! We then went through to the products section and Tash recommended some products for my hair type and I chose some based on her expertise. I got the Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Shampoo and Conditioner and the Redken Real Control Thermal Resist. Fast forward to washing my hair at home… it felt great after the first shampoo and condition, and the Real Control is great for using before you apply heat to your hair and also just as a refresher.
The entire experience is amazing and I can’t wait for my next appointment! This salon is so inviting and everyone is so friendly and professional. As for Tash, my stylist, she so clearly loves what she does, and loves the products she uses. Her knowledge about them all is endless, and her skill is obvious. Get your butt’s down to Institute Aesthetic and let Tash (check her out below) breathe new life into your hair!
Don’t forget to keep coming back every few weeks to check what new products we’ve tried and what amazing things Tash has done to my hair!
