People of Cape Town you need to get your fine selves down, or rather UP to ON19 Restaurant! This stunning restaurant can be found on the 19th floor of The Westin Cape Town. As you can see (above) the view from your table is incredible, and happily, the food is just as spectacular!
I was so happy to get an invitation to the launch of the new Winter Menu at ON19 restaurant, and the husband was just as lucky as he got to taste it all too! Paired with delectable Springfield wines and fantastic company, we had such a splendid night!
We got the opportunity to meet and hear from the gorgeous Siba Mtongana, our very own food star and brand ambassador of The Westin, she has accomplished so much and is an absolute gem! Check out her website to read more about her and her cookbook.
Our first platter arrived and it looked just as remarkable as it tasted…
The ON19 restaurant dishes are full of Superfoods, which are a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for our health and well-being, so it’s absolutely delicious and it’s good for you!
Above from left to right we have:
- Apple and fennel home-cured salmon with ginger soil
- Grilled calamari with rocket, lemon, chilli and celery salad
- Crisp fried prawn dumplings with pickled cucumber and curried mango mayonnaise
The Salmon absolutely blew my mind, with its intense acidic flavour and perfect texture, it was the winner for me for sure! The husband loved the Prawn dumplings with that interesting curried mango mayonnaise, so different and delicious! Having said that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Calamari, it was fresh and delicious, but the Salmon wins here… Hands down!
From left to right:
- Lamb and goats cheese fritters with rhaita
- Potted roast garlic pannacotta with wild mushroom and brioche crumble
- Mini country style chicken liver waffles with rosemary and thyme infused honey figs
I thoroughly enjoyed the fritters, lamb and goats cheese being two of my favourite things, with quite a wild taste the rhaita compliments it perfectly. The mushrooms and brioche crumble are delicious but the texture of the pannacotta just isn’t for me. The husband went crazy over the chicken liver waffles! I also don’t like the texture of livers, I’m starting to think I have texture issues, but I did taste the dish and it had a great flavour, the waffles are a unique idea and the figs, delish!
The olive crusted Tuna steak with warm spinach and a bulgar wheat salad with balsamic syrup was nice, a meaty fish with a slightly sweet flavour along with a crunchy wheat accompaniment. The grilled Franschhoek Salmon trout with shallot potatoes, orange reduction, and citrus fennel salad was incredible, perfectly cooked fish with a citrus tang, the fennel and orange flavours took the Salmon to a whole new level. Yum!

Above is the Hazelnut Gnocchi with confit duck, forest mushrooms and white wine buerre blanc, lovely flavours but unfortunately the gnocchi was too doughy for me. The amount of pressure the kitchen was on I’m sure that the next time we try the gnocchi it’ll be perfect! Next to that is the Lamb Porchetta with pistachio and lemon gremolata, romesca sauce, barley and fine beans. The lamb was delicious, perfectly cooked, with a hint of lemon and nutty flavour to compliment the rich lamb-y taste.
Lastly, the lovely ON19 restaurant staff brought in the dessert platter. An intricate collection of ingredients carefully put together for your enjoyment.
- Catalan custard with sugar coated fruit jelly and spiced citrus fruits
- Baked lemon cheesecake with aerated red velvet sponge, beetroot and candied pecans
- White chocolate mousse with lime jelly and mango sorbet
I am a savoury girl through and through, I will always choose salty over sweet, but I must say I really enjoyed these desserts. The Catalan custard was my favourite, smooth and subtle punctuated by the sweet fruits and fruit jelly. The lemon cheesecake was lovely but I found the aerated red velvet texture a bit strange, possibly exacerbated by candied pecans, of which I am not a fan. There was nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea. The mousse and mango sorbet couple fantastically, a sweet meets tart type of affair and a definite treat for the palate!
All the dishes exhibited the different components they were made of so well, staying true to their original flavours while each complimenting the other. The chef is clearly conscientious and respectful of each component. This menu is an absolute treat and you should definitely give it a try…
