The perfect Oudtshoorn itinerary…

The perfect Oudtshoorn itinerary…

I just had the most incredible holiday in Oudtshoorn, even better than I imagined it would be. I spent weeks planning and organizing and it all came together perfectly!

www.keepingyoursanity.com, travel, blogger, oudtshoorn, wildlife, #KYStravels, family, roadtrip, family friendly, holiday, vacation, klein karoo, route 62, south africa, perfect itinerary, what to do, kid friendly, child friendly, things to do, cango, Buffelsdrift, Buffelsdrift Game Farm, Hippopotamus, Hippos, watering hole, wildlife, tents, glamping, animals, game lodge, dinner, room, tent, clouds, meet south africa

I originally planned this as a completely family focused holiday, because Oudtshoorn is an amazing place to spend a few days if you have kids. And while it is definitely family heaven, the itinerary actually works for anyone.

About a week before our trip we were out in Cape Town and randomnly met two guys from Texas on a month long trip around SA. We spent some time with them and mentioned our upcoming trip… I guess the itinerary was quite good because they jumped on board, had me book them in everywhere we were going, and just like that we had two extra travel companions!

We set off for Oudtshoorn at midday on friday, a beautiful drive which involved a 13,4km long roadworks section through Cogmanskloof that we weren’t expecting. It added about 2 hours onto the trip so unfortunately when we arrived at AfriCamps it was already dark. At least the stops were along the scenic Route 62 so it wasn’t the worst view…

We stopped for lunch at Karusa Vineyards about halfway between Buffelsdrift and Cango Caves. They make craft beer and wine, which they serve alongside pizza and tapas. We wandered in, ordered some beer and found a spot under the tree.

It is such a relaxed atmosphere, the kids playing in the play area or on the grass, we took our shoes off and just enjoyed doing nothing. I ordered some tapas plates, Jason ordered salami and olive tapas, well he thought he did but actually it was a pizza… We all knew this but it came as a huge surprise to him. It was delicious and the tapas were good.

The Cango Caves are found 29km outside of Oudtshoorn, a limestone ridge side by side with the Swartberg Mountains. These incredible dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations, are a non-renewable resource so conservation of them is important. This is why they have limited the amount of visitors per tour so booking in advance is essential. You can email them here to make a booking. The Heritage tours run every hour on the hour from 9-4 at a cost of R100 per adult and R60 per child. The Adventure tour runs every 90 min from 9:30-15:30 for R150 per adult and R90 per child (over the age of 6 only).

Old Mill Country Lodge

www.keepingyoursanity.com

We stayed at the Old Mill Country Lodge or “De Oude Meul Country Lodge”, same place. The lodge is located quite far out of town, just before the Cango Caves. It’s a very kid-friendly place, a perfect way to end our family holiday!

www.keepingyoursanity.com

After check-in the boys went for a ride on the boat and played in both of the play areas. Then just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, my oldest found a field of rabbits!! Happiness is… cuddling bunnies!

There also happened to be cows, sheep and a puppy!

Eventually we had to drag ourselves away from the animals and go have dinner. We ended up eating in their restaurant because no one wanted to drive all the way to town to buy food for a braai. What a lucky turn of events because the food turned out to be incredible!

www.keepingyoursanity.comwww.keepingyoursanity.comwww.keepingyoursanity.com

We had Split-pea soup, Venison pancakes (soooo yum!), Venison pie, Eland steak and the most scrumptious of all… Black Wildebeest. It was some of the best food we had all weekend. We will without a doubt be coming back here again!

Kaai 4 Braai

On the drive home, we decided to go via Mossel Bay to avoid the roadworks, we stopped at one of our old favourites – Kaai 4 Braai! We saw dolphins playing in the surf and got oysters from next door, but besides that we had the usual which you can read about on my post: Our Mossel Bay Adventures
