Safari Ostrich Farm – Oudtshoorn

Safari Ostrich Farm – Oudtshoorn

As we drove under Safari Ostrich Farm‘s very impressive sign, to the sound of our 4 year old chanting “Where are the Sostriches??”, I could feel my anxiety growing…

You see, if you’ve read my “about me” page you would already know that I am terrified of only one animal, the Ostrich. I had an awful experience with one as a kid, long story short it got loose with me on it and panicked, not exactly a fun time. I have strategically avoided them ever since. For some reason I decided that enough is enough, I was conquering my fear of them on this trip.

After a quick trip to the curio shop we headed off to the tour. It starts off in a little room with lots of Ostrich related things, as well as an incubator with a few baby ostrich chicks and a lot of eggs. Our guide was an endless source of information, which I understood about 99% of the time, her thick accent made it tough sometimes.

Below are some of the interesting things we saw…

Ostriches are not exactly the brightest creatures, their brain is smaller than their eyeball, and they’ll eat just about anything.

Here are some of the things they’ve found inside the stomachs of various Ostriches:

An Ostrich can run up to 70 km per hour which is the fastest land speed of any bird.

I like to think of Ostriches as full service animals because they are farmed for basically everything. Their feathers for fashion and feather dusting, their skin for leather products, and their body for meat. Even their (super-strong) eggs are used decoratively, and you could eat them, just watch your cholesterol levels! www.keepingyoursanity.com, travel, blogger, oudtshoorn, wildlife, #KYStravels, family, roadtrip, family friendly, holiday, vacation, klein karoo, route 62, south africa, perfect itinerary, what to do, kid friendly, child friendly, things to do, cango, ostriches, ostrich, safari ostrich farm, Safari, ostrich ride

Here are a few different types of Ostriches:

The South African Black Ostrich (Struthio camelus domesticus), the females are a brown messy colour…

The White Ostrich (Struthio camelus)…

The Kenyan Red Ostrich (Struthio Camelus Massaicus)…

And finally, an Emu (Dromaius Novaehollandiae)…

Just for the record photo’s are deceiving when it comes to these two birds. In a photo the Emu looks prettier than the Ostrich but in real life I think that Ostriches are easier on the eyes. It really is a rock and hard place kind of situation though, as neither are winning any beauty pageants anytime soon…

There are a ton of things to learn about Ostriches, but I’ll leave some information for when you go on the tour! The kids loved feeding them and weren’t in the least bit afraid, unlike their mother.

It was finally time to climb on these giant birds! AAAAAAAH!

Time for me to conquer my fear and ironically both my kids were jealous that they weren’t big enough to ride the ostrich.

First they make you put on these incredibly sexy pants…

Then they put you on the Ostrich and tell you to hang on to the wings and lean back…

This lovely lady was so fun to watch on the Ostrich, I think she was even more afraid than me!

Facing my fear definitely worked, I can happily say that I’m no longer scared of Ostriches… that doesn’t mean we’ll be hanging out regularly though.

After our tour and my death-defying ostrich ride (too much? ha ha) we sat down for a set lunch while the kids ran around in the play area. At R250 (10% less if you book online beforehand) for a tour and a 3 course lunch my expectations weren’t very high but I cannot stress enough how amazing the lunch turned out to be! The food was delicious! Fresh bread rolls with butter, soup of the day, Ostrich steak with MASSIVE sides of savoury rice, green salad and roasted vegetables, and just when you think you can’t eat another thing, Malva pudding with warm custard for dessert. Every aspect of the meal was delectable, from the succulent medium rare steak (cooked to perfection) to the yummy homemade salad dressing!

We had a marvellous time at the Safari Ostrich Farm. It’s a great activity, especially for the family, and at a great price!
