So the husband and I recently had a staycation (you know… like a vacation but close to home) at the Taj Hotel in Cape Town. We have a Taste by Taj Membership, which is a yearly membership that gives you benefits within the Taj Group, so we decided, having almost reached the end of that year, to finally use it!
We started our day off at the V&A Waterfront because any holiday in Cape Town should start there. I absolutely love the Waterfront, there’s just something about it that makes you feel like you’re on holiday, any time of day, any day of the week.
We did a little shopping and then tried out the Scene at Nu Metro. An awesome concept where you relax on comfortable lazy boy seats, order lunch and get to eat and drink (alcohol too if you wish) while you watch your movie! The bunny chows were pretty average, but I absolutely loved the little burgers! It was fun and we’d definitely do it again, hopefully this time we won’t be sitting in front of a couple who insist on speaking loudly throughout the ENTIRE movie. So annoying…
We then made our way to the Taj Hotel to check in, a quick and easy process by very friendly staff. After taking our one tiny bag up to our room and having a look around we went to Twankey Bar for a drink.
Its entrance is outside the Hotel but it is part of the group so with the Taste of Taj Membership we get 50% off the food there (as well as Bombay Brasserie and Mint). The bar itself is fun and vibey, they have a DJ and sometimes Live Music, plenty of drinks specials and their cocktails are amazing! We enjoyed oysters, beer, a chilli mojito, a kiwi caipirinha and some other snacks. The quality of both the food, drinks, and service is fantastic. We will definitely be back soon!

As parents doing nothing holds great appeal. When we say we’re doing nothing it’s actually a choice. ‘Nothing’ is something. So after Twankey, we decided to go do nothing, and it was amazing! We had a bath in the middle of the afternoon (who does that??) and then we just relaxed until dinner, the husband even managed to have a nap!
Our reservation was at 8pm at the Bombay Brasserie, one of the two restaurants at the Taj Hotel. We have heard good things about this restaurant but unfortunately our experience wasn’t that great. We were shown to our table, asked what water we would like to order, then waited for about 10 min for someone, anyone, to come back so we could order wine. I finally got someone’s attention and ordered some wine, then after another 10 min they brought it, still no water, and have I mentioned that we still hadn’t been given a food menu? So after asking for one and for our water we, after like 25 min, finally had drinks and a menu. By the way, Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc – soooo good!
We really enjoyed the tandoori chicken starter and the palate cleansing sorbet was delicious and fun to look at, with the whole dry ice mystical thing happening, very cool. For mains, we had the spiced coconut and green mango line-fish curry and lamb shank saffron curry with basmati rice, naan and cucumber raita. We ordered everything together, except the naan, but the waiter suggested we get some so as an afterthought we ordered that. The reason I mention it is that when our food finally arrived we got our two main meals and the naan, no rice and no raita. It took me awhile to get someone’s attention, and when I asked about the rest of our order she literally just walked away without a word, I assume to go order the food she’d forgotten. Once we were almost done with the food we had received the rice and raita finally arrived. Which, besides being way too late, was extremely disappointing. At this point we had been at the restaurant for so long we didn’t even want our pre-ordered dessert platter (part of the Taste of Taj voucher booklet). We asked that our second bottle of wine and dessert be sent up to the room, which they happily agreed to, and considering the service we’d had, we were very happy about that. I hope that we just had a bad experience and that it’s normally much better, but as it stands we won’t be going back.

The Taj has a pillow and blanket menu so if you aren’t happy with your pillow you can actually order a different one off their menu!
In the morning we slept a bit late (that’s 8:30 am if you’re wondering what we consider late) and then had a delicious buffet breakfast at Mint, it even had sushi. I went upstairs to pack and even though we still had almost 2 hours before we had to check out we heard banging on the door, and before I could even get to it the cleaning lady had come inside, seeing that we were still there promptly asked how many minutes until we were going to leave. For the most part, it was a fun experience, we enjoyed it, and we will most likely renew our membership.
If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you.
